Custom Emerald Rings in Delta: What to Know Before Choosing May’s Birthstone

Emerald has a way of stopping people in their tracks. Its green is rich, expressive, and full of life, which is why I love working with it for May birthstone jewellery. If you are looking for custom jewellery in Delta that clients can make deeply personal, an emerald ring (or pendant or earrings!) can be a beautiful choice when it is designed with the right care and expectations.

At Trish Arato Design studio, I approach emeralds differently than diamonds. Diamonds are known for hardness and brilliance. Emeralds are loved for colour, character, and emotion. The best emerald ring is not simply the biggest or cleanest stone. It is the emerald with the right colour, the right setting, and the right story behind it.

Why Choose an Emerald Ring for a May Birthstone Piece?

Emeralds are meaningful for May because they are associated with renewal, growth, and lasting love. Their deep green colour feels timeless, but also personal, which makes them suited to milestone birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day gifts, and custom pieces.

I often tell clients that emeralds feel less formal than diamonds, but no less important. A custom emerald ring can be elegant, romantic, vintage-inspired, modern, or quietly everyday depending on how it is designed. That flexibility is one of the reasons emeralds work so beautifully in custom jewellery.

If you are starting with a birthstone idea, I recommend looking at the meaning of emerald first, then pairing that meaning with a design that suits the person who will wear it. My Birthstone Guide is a helpful place to begin, but the real magic happens when we translate that birthstone into something wearable and personal.

What Should Delta Clients Know Before Choosing an Emerald?

Emeralds are judged differently than diamonds. With diamonds, many people immediately think about clarity grades, sparkle, and carat weight. With emeralds, colour is the heart of the stone. The most beautiful emeralds usually have a vivid green colour that feels alive in natural light.

Emeralds also commonly have natural inclusions. These internal characteristics are part of the gemstone’s identity and are often called the stone’s garden. I do not see inclusions as flaws in the same way many people think of diamond inclusions. Instead, I look at whether they affect beauty, durability, and the way the emerald performs in a finished ring.

Treatment disclosure is important too. Many emeralds are treated to improve their appearance, and that is normal in the gemstone world when it is properly disclosed. As a GIA Graduate Gemmologist, I believe clients deserve plain-language guidance on what they are buying, what is expected, and what should raise concern.

For a custom emerald ring, I also consider shape and proportion. Oval, cushion, emerald-cut, pear, and round stones each create a different mood. The right shape depends on the hand, the setting, and how often the ring will be worn.

Which Ring Settings Help Protect an Emerald?

Emeralds can be worn beautifully, but they need thoughtful design. They are not as hard as diamonds, and they can be more sensitive to impact. For that reason, the setting matters as much as the stone.

Protective settings are often a smart choice for emerald rings. A bezel can frame the stone and protect the edges. A halo can add sparkle while giving the centre stone a softer border. A lower-profile setting can reduce how often the ring catches during daily wear. Even the choice of prongs matters, especially around corners and points.

This does not mean an emerald ring has to look heavy or overly cautious. Good design is about balance. I want the emerald to feel secure, but I also want its colour to remain the focus. A ring should look beautiful from the top, comfortable from the side, and sensible for the way the client actually lives.

Can an Emerald Be Combined With Diamonds or Old Yellow Gold?

Yes. Emeralds can pair beautifully with diamonds, especially when the diamonds are used as accents rather than competition. Small diamonds can brighten an emerald ring, define the shape, or add meaning from an existing family piece. The key is to make sure the diamonds support the emerald rather than overwhelm it.

Old yellow gold can also be part of the conversation. Many clients come in with jewellery they no longer wear, often pieces inherited from family or styles that no longer feel like them. I offer a fair and transparent evaluation process to turn old, unused yellow gold jewellery into a brand-new custom piece or trade it in for value at current market pricing.

When old gold is brought into the studio, I can evaluate it using a state-of-the-art XRF machine. This gives clear information about metal content, which helps determine whether the gold can be used toward the project or traded in for value. For many clients, this makes a new emerald ring feel even more meaningful because part of the past is helping create something for the present.

How I Guide Delta Clients Through a Custom Emerald Ring Consultation

My process starts with listening. Before I talk about settings or gemstones, I want to understand who the ring is for, how it will be worn, and what the piece needs to represent. A May birthstone ring for a birthday may have a different feeling than an emerald engagement ring or an anniversary piece.

From there, we look at gemstone direction. I explain colour, clarity, shape, and durability in simple terms. I do not expect clients to arrive knowing gemstone language. My job is to make the options clear so the final choice feels confident, not confusing.

Once the emerald direction is clear, we talk about design. That may include metal colour, ring profile, accent stones, setting protection, and whether the design should feel classic, modern, vintage-inspired, or completely personal. If old gold or inherited stones are part of the project, we review those pieces carefully before deciding how they should be incorporated.

Is an Emerald Ring Right for You?

An emerald ring is right for you if you love rich colour, meaningful symbolism, and jewellery with character. It is especially fitting if you want a May birthstone piece that feels more personal than something chosen from a display case.

It may not be the right choice if you want a ring that can handle every kind of rough daily wear without thought. Because emeralds are known to be a softer gemstone, they are often better suited for earrings or a necklace rather than a standalone ring that takes daily impact. However, if you are looking for that perfect green hue for an everyday ring, we can always explore gorgeous, durable alternatives like green sapphires or green garnets. I would rather guide you toward the right piece than push you into the wrong one.
